Heart of Texas Veterinary Specialty Center: Veterinary Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)

At Heart of Texas, we are constantly striving to provide the very cutting edge in veterinary specialty and emergency medicine to the communities of greater Austin and Round Rock. Our practice is pleased to include hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) among the many effective treatment options available to our pet patients.

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been utilized for years in human medicine to treat a wide range of medical conditions. Treatment is administered by placing the patient in a pressurized environment full of pure oxygen, where the higher ambient air pressure enables the body to absorb significantly more oxygen than would otherwise be possible under normal conditions. As a result, oxygen levels in the blood rise, enabling the body to better fight infections and heal from a variety of conditions.

How Can Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Help My Pet?

Though still an emerging methodology in veterinary medicine, offered by only the most advanced practices in the country, hyperbaric oxygen therapy can have many benefits for your pet’s health depending on his or her needs. Aside from supporting healing in a general sense, some specific treatment applications of HBOT include:

  • Wound management
  • Swelling, as in instances of snakebite, serious injury, burns, or following surgery
  • Infection
  • Pancreatitis
  • Conditions where breathing is compromised, such as carbon monoxide poisoning, smoke inhalation, drowning or strangulation
  • Post-operative recovery

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is also non-invasive, requiring little to no preparation or recovery time, and is completely painless for your pet. And despite being a unique procedure, it is also covered by most pet insurance plans.
